Remaining Base Oil
OELCHECK Test equipment: Siemens test ring
Sample quantity needed: About 1 g
Unit: Remaining base oil in percent of weight
Spot diameter in mm
Test result: Remaining base oil
Spot diameter
Operating time: About 6,5 hours
Analysis of: Lubricating grease
Brief description: The Siemens ring is filled with 1 g of grease, placed on a filter paper and stored for 6 hours at 80°C in an oven. The weight difference of the ring before and after the 6 hours shows the amount of oil that is bleed out. The diameter of the spot on the paper is measured and a picture is made from the spot.
Statement: The bleeding out characteristic from the used grease is compared to the results from the fresh grease. If the loss of oil is strongly increased in comparison to the fresh grease, the reason is often that the grease has been becoming very soft, for example because of to much water in the grease or by a destroyed thickener. If the release of oil is strongly decreased the grease is e.g. oxidised or it’s dried out of other reasons. Possible reasons can be too long regreasing intervals, high temperatures or strong vibrations.
A big advantage of the test is the small sample volume in comparison to other standardised tests.
