Dropping Point of grease
OELCHECK
Test equipment:
Automatic test instrument for dropping point
Mettler Toledo FP83HT, FP90
Sample quantitiy needed: 2 g
Unit: ° C
Test result: Temperature, when grease becomes liquid by softening of the thickener.
Operating time: ~ 1.5 h
Analysis of: Lubricating greases
Brief description: The dropping point is the temperature when grease becomes liquid by softening of the thickener. That means when a drop from the liquid grease is falling through an opening to the bottom of a test pipe.
Statement:

The dropping point is mainly an indication for the quality control of the grease producer. It`s importance for operation temperature limit of the grease is low. There is no reliable formula available to calculate the upper temperature limit of usage from the dropping point.

To determine the temperature range the grease can be used depends from the application and the working condition. For roller bearings it can be estimated using mechanically-dynamically test devices like FAG FE-9.
