All engine oils |
| Brief description: |
One oil drop is put on a filter paper. Nach einstündigem Erwärmen des Papiers hat sich das Öl gleichmäßig verteilt. After the paper has been heated up for 1 hour, the oil has spread homogeneously. The spot as a particular form of the paper chromatography is shown with the CCC-Photometer by a computer based camera. The sludge carrying properties (dispersing properties) and the soot content of engine oils can be concluded from the surface, the homogeneous appearance and the black dyeing of the spot. |
| Statement: |
The sludge carrying properties of engine oils allow a statement on the cleanliness of the engine . They are reduced by additive decomposition, oxidation and acid reaction products of fuel combustion. Beside the IR-spectroscopy the spot shows through a homogenous spreading of the soot particles whether the oil is still able to keep contaminants suspending in a way that they are transported to the filter and filtered. The intensity of the dark dyeing shows the soot content. A transparent outer ring indicates fuel. If antifreeze glycole is included, the oil drop does not spread.
Due to the perfect eye of the camera the subjective feeling at a visual control of the sample can objectively and reproducibly converted into a numeric value. |
